CAT 2026 Entrance Exam for MBA aspirants stands as the bridge between ambition and career. However, many students find themselves standing at one same question: what is the ideal cut-off for the desired IIM? Similar to other entrance exams, the percentile and cutoff differs, and preparing after knowing the cut-off and admission criteria can offer clarity along with concrete targets.

Additionally, the chances of a candidate getting an interview call from IIM are dependent holistically on the CAT percentile, sectional performance, academic record, category, academic background, work experience and the admission policy of the particular institute. That's why two candidates with the same CAT percentile may not have the same chances of getting admitted.

Is it enough for IIM Admission to be 99 Percentile?

While a 99 percentile is a good CAT score, it doesn't mean that one is guaranteed admission to an IIM. Each IIM has its own shortlist and selection process. While performance in CAT is significant, institutes can also take into account previous academic performance, work experience, diversity and performance in subsequent selection rounds.

For instance, for its PGP 2026–28 admission process, IIM Ahmedabad specified minimum overall and sectional CAT percentile requirements that candidates must meet to be considered for the subsequent stages.

The institute then shortlists candidates based on their CAT performance and academic performance, and the final selection is made based on CAT, interview, academics, co-curricular and extra-curricular achievements and work experience. Therefore, 99 percentile should be taken as a good benchmark, rather than an admission guarantee.

CAT Cutoff vs Final CAT Percentile: What Is the Difference?

This is one of the most crucial things that CAT aspirants should know. An IIM may be releasing a minimum CAT percentile or qualifying cutoff. If a candidate meets the cut-off, it does not mean that he or she has been selected for the next stage; it is just that the candidate has passed the cut-off and will be considered for the next stage, depending on the other criteria set by the institute.

Does not imply that all those who meet the cut-off will be called for an interview. For example, the minimum percentile for CAT 2025 for the General/EWS category was published as 95 percentile overall and 85 percentile in each section at IIM Ahmedabad. The minimum for NC-OBC candidates was 90 overall and 80 sectional percentile. The thresholds were different for other categories.

This is important because the actual percentile required for being competitive may be significantly higher than the percentile listed in the brochure, depending on the institute and candidate profile.

Academic Profile after CAT

CAT is a big component of the admission process, while some IIMs also consider a candidate's academic record. So, your Class 10, Class 12 and graduation marks can still be significant even if you have done well in CAT.

This is especially crucial for students who are considering what percentile they should aim for. A candidate with a strong academic record may have a different shortlist profile to another candidate who has the same CAT score but weaker past academic record.

For instance, during the shortlisting of candidates, the application rating at IIM Ahmedabad takes into account academic performance and CAT performance. So it might be wrong to say that students with average marks can't get into the IIMs. It means that preparation for CAT should not be the sole criterion in the admission process.

Do you Need Work Experience for IIM Admission?

Relevant work experience is acceptable, but not all institutes and years require it. An experienced candidate might have a different profile in the MBA classroom than a fresh graduate. For this reason, some IIM selection processes give weightage to the work experience or take it as a part of the profile. But work experience is not required for CAT. Freshers can also apply and compete for admission to IIM.

Students should not therefore presume that a job is taken for the sole purpose of enhancing their CAT profile is the best choice. The career plans, academic performance and the criteria for admission to the target IIMs should be taken into account.

Is it possible for a Non-Engineer to get into an IIM through CAT?

Absolutely. CAT is open to graduates from different academic backgrounds, provided they meet the CAT eligibility criteria. Appearing in the examination is open to candidates from all commerce, science, humanities, medicine, law and other streams provided they fulfil the eligibility criteria.

Some of the IIMs take into account academic diversity in the selection process. This can be important because management classrooms are enriched by students with varying academic and professional backgrounds. So, for a non-engineering candidate, CAT preparation should not be taken with the premise that he or she needs to have an engineering background to be successful. The focus should be on building a strong performance across VARC, DILR and Quantitative Ability while understanding the admission criteria of the IIMs you are targeting.

What to do After CAT 2026 Result

Following the CAT 2026 result, the candidates will have to wait for the shortlists of the institutes for admission. The procedure varies from one IIM to another. The subsequent step could be Personal Interview (PI), Written Ability Test or Analytical Writing Test, and assessment of other profile elements, depending on the institute.

If you are aiming for the top IIMs, don't wait till you get a call for an interview to prepare. There is a different type of preparation needed for the post-CAT stage. Candidates are not required to solve quantitative problems within a stipulated time frame, but can discuss their academic background, work experience, career aspirations, current affairs, business issues and reasons for pursuing an MBA. While a good CAT score can open the door, the candidate must show maturity, clarity and awareness in the interview.

What is the Ideal CAT Percentile Target?

No single percentile is guaranteed to get you into all the IIM's. Rather than aiming for a minimum cutoff, aspirants should aim for a high percentile and have multiple institutes in their list. The right target also depends on the category of the candidate, academic record, work experience and preferred IIMs.

The percentile you should target depends on the IIMs or top B-Schools you want to apply to, your category, academic record, work experience and overall profile. Thus, the right question to ask is “What percentile gives my profile a realistic chance at the colleges I want?” and mold your preparation accordingly.

Backup Option for MBA Admission

Having a plan B always helps in life. It has over 80 top partner universities/ B-schools in India accepting GMCAT Score for seamless admission. Students can register for this entrance test anytime as the exam is conducted multiple times throughout the year. What must MBA Aspirants Know?

CAT is surely one of the doors to MBA, but the IIM admission journey is more of a multi-stage thing and not just a single exam score. Your CAT score puts you into the competition, sure. However, your academic record, your profile, and how you perform in the next selection rounds, can shape what comes after that.

That’s also why CAT aspirants shouldn’t just give up if their academic record isn't perfectly polished. A strong CAT performance can still open doors, and if you apply thoughtfully across different B-schools, you can widen the set of options you have.

So, for CAT 2026 aspirants, the plan should be bigger than merely “clearing CAT cutoff”. Aim for the highest possible percentile, read the admission policies for the IIMs you care about, and start preparing early for the stages that follow the CAT result.
