The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has launched the Single Girl Child Scholarship 2024, an initiative aimed at promoting education among single girl children by offering financial assistance to support their academic journey.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Must be an Indian national.

Be the only girl child of their parents.

Achieve a minimum score of 60% in their CBSE Class 10 exams.

Currently studying in Class 11 or 12 in a CBSE-affiliated school.

Scholarship Benefits

Selected candidates will receive a financial award of ₹500 per month for a maximum of two years. This amount is designed to ease the financial burden of education for deserving students.

How to Apply

Eligible students can apply online through the official CBSE website (cbse.gov.in) by December 23, 2024. After submission, the respective school will verify the application. Once validated, the application will proceed for further processing.

Renewal of Scholarship

Students who previously received the Single Girl Child Scholarship are eligible for renewal. For renewal, applicants must:

Secure at least 50% marks in Class 11.

Be promoted to Class 12.

A major initiative to promote STEM collaboration between India and Australia has been marked by the awarding of fellowships to 15 Indian women researchers. These fellowships, conferred by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, in partnership with the Australian Academy of Science, have been designed to provide opportunities for international research and skill enhancement in STEM fields.

Selected researchers will be enabled by these fellowships, which range from 2-6 months in duration, to collaborate with Australian universities and research institutions. Diverse fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) will be addressed through the projects undertaken. Knowledge sharing, expertise development, and engagement in cutting-edge research will be facilitated for the awardees.

A competitive selection process was conducted, with more than 100 applications reviewed from across India. The chosen candidates were selected based on their academic qualifications, research experience, and the strength of their research proposals. By supporting these researchers, a significant opportunity for advancing their careers and contributing to innovative projects in STEM has been provided.

A statement was made by a DST spokesperson expressing confidence in the program’s impact. "STEM collaboration between India and Australia is being actively promoted by the DST, and this fellowship program is considered an important step toward fostering international research partnerships. The Australian Academy of Science has also welcomed the program, emphasising its commitment to promoting global collaboration in STEM research. This partnership with the DST is anticipated to strengthen international research ties," stated a spokesperson for the Academy.

The David Donald Fellowship for Data Journalism has been announced by Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), providing U.S. journalists with a unique opportunity to enhance their data journalism skills. A stipend of $10,000 and a year’s worth of training and mentorship from experienced data journalists will be offered through the fellowship, which is designed to help journalists refine their data analysis and storytelling abilities.

Journalists from diverse backgrounds and those working in smaller markets are being especially encouraged to apply, as the fellowship aims to empower those who might not otherwise have access to advanced data journalism resources. Diana Fuentes, IRE’s Executive Director, expressed excitement about the initiative, stating, "This fellowship is being offered to journalists who are passionate about data-driven storytelling. A data-driven project will be worked on by the fellows, with funding provided by IRE. This hands-on experience is expected to allow fellows to apply their skills in real-world contexts, contributing to their growth as data journalists.

Applications for the fellowship are being accepted now, with a deadline set for January 31, 2025. Applicants are required to submit a resume, cover letter, and project proposal outlining a data journalism project they would like to pursue during the fellowship year. The program provides an opportunity for journalists to gain invaluable expertise in a field that is growing rapidly in importance.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has introduced the Swanath Scholarship Scheme to provide financial assistance to economically disadvantaged students pursuing technical education. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on students and empower them to focus on their academic goals.  

Under the scheme, eligible students will receive an annual scholarship of ₹50,000. The program benefits diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate students enrolled in AICTE-approved institutions. Priority will be given to students with disabilities, those from economically weaker sections, and meritorious candidates, ensuring that the aid reaches the most deserving.  

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must meet specific criteria. The family’s annual income should not exceed ₹8 lakh, and students must have secured a minimum of 60% aggregate marks in their previous academic qualifications. The scheme also prioritises students belonging to SC, ST, and OBC categories or those with disabilities.  

The application process is straightforward and can be completed online through the AICTE’s official website. Applicants are required to submit essential documents, including income certificates, caste certificates, disability certificates (if applicable), and academic marksheets. Following a merit-based selection process and thorough document verification, the list of beneficiaries will be announced.
