In the memory of Singhapurush Radha Govinda Baruah, the nonagenarian who was the doyen of Assam's media, culture, sports and entrepreneurship, The Assam Tribune Group has inaugurated two prestigious fellowships to shape the next crop of culture and media professionals.

R.G. Baruah Fellowship in Cultural Studies will promote Assam's diverse cultural heritage in creative expression and research. Postgraduate students, research scholars, early-career researchers, and cultural practitioners based in Assam are eligible to apply for the fellowship, with financial support of ₹50,000 and expert mentorship offered. Disciplines covered include Art, Craft, Performing Arts, Folklore, Cuisine, Rituals & Ceremonies, Clothing etc. The initiative encourages inclusive access, especially by marginalized groups and individuals with special needs.

R.G. Baruah Fellowship in Media is meant to encourage excellence in journalism to allow independent and budding journalists from the Northeast. The fellowship supports independent journalists with a grant of ₹50,000 and mentoring, encouraging quality reporting in domains like Environment, Public Health, Gender and DEI, Social Sector and Small Enterprise, Communities, Empowerment. Mass communication students, field reporters, and digital or print media practitioners can apply.

Both fellowships are open to candidates aged between 21 and 30 years. The application must be made with a project proposal, two original works, references, and a statement of purpose. Application closes on May 25, 2025.

In a philanthropic move to encourage deserving students, Wisdom Pre-University College of Science, Bidar, launched a ₹1 crore merit scholarship scheme for deserving I PU study aspirants in 2025-26. College principal Mohammed Asifuddin launched the scheme at a special function held to welcome SSLC passed-out students.

Spiking the energy in a packed hall of young high achievers from various institutions, Mr. Asifuddin highlighted the college's commitment to harness and nurture its intellectual talent irrespective of economic lines. "We are not offering admissions but dreams an opportunity to grow," he said.

The grant of 400 deserving beneficiaries will be in the form of fee waivers. Among them

100 students having 95% and above in SSLC will be offered 75% concession on tuition and 50% concession on hostel fees.

100 students scoring 85% and above will be offered 35% concession on tuition and hostel fees.

200 students having above 75% score will be offered 25% concession on tuition fee and 10% concession on hostel fees.

The experience of this is not merely a tale of fund assistance. Mr. Asifuddin also started the collaborative work of this institute to seek probable but merit-cum-sincere students. The college also provides free coaching classes to SSLC supplementary exam aspirants—a godsend for one to begin with a brand new white page.

The scholarship is an opportunity for foreign students to undertake higher studies in Japan at the fee-free fee. In being eligible to apply for the MEXT Scholarship, the following overall requirements should be met by the applicants:

– Applicants must be from diplomatically represented countries of Japan.

– Students for research should have been born after April 2, 1990.

– The candidates should be the right academic qualification to qualify to be accepted into the course that they desire to study in Japan. For research students, having a bachelor's degree and above is expected by default.

– The candidates should be mentally and physically healthy in order to qualify to study in Japan.

– The proficiency in English or Japanese is usually required but not necessarily according to the course.

MEXT 2025-2026: Step-by-step application process

The candidates who are interested in applying should know that the process of the MEXT Scholarship usually goes through this order:

Submission of applications: The applicants submit the related documents to the Japanese Embassy or Consulates in India.

Screening of documents: The Embassy shortlists the candidates by screening the applications.

Written test: The shortlisted students must appear for written tests in the subject topic of relevance to the course of study for which they have applied.

Interview round: Selected students of the written test are interviewed by the embassy officials.

University allotment: Shortlisted interviewed students are sent to MEXT, and then Japanese universities are contacted by them for final admission.

Final selection and certification: Final decisions are made by MEXT, and scholarship offers are dispatched.
