NHRC, India initiated the two-week Online Short Term Internship Programme with a total intake of 80 students selected out of 906 applications received for November 2025. The selected students represent various academic disciplines from 16 States and Union territories across the nation. The programme aims to impart a holistic understanding about promotion and protection of Human Rights to the college/ university students studying in any stream.

Shri Bharat Lal, Secretary General, NHRC, in his inaugural address said that the Commission has been trying to reach each part of the country in tune with its mandate through online internships for building human rights awareness among students. The purpose was to sensitize, educate, and inspire young minds to uphold human rights as living values rooted in dignity. He said that every denial-whether by discrimination or by non-availability of basic amenities- amounts to the denial of human rights, as dignity is central to all rights. He called upon the interns to reflect deeply and live purposefully and translate the Constitutional ideals into action to emerge as ambassadors of justice, empathy, and dignity. Shri Lal said that human rights are very dynamic, always evolving with time and bringing new challenges.

Giving an overview of the internship curriculum, NHRC Joint Secretary, Smt Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak said that in 43 sessions by 34 expert speakers, the interns will be exposed to important topics such as international law and human rights, rights of manual scavengers, mental health as a human right, juvenile justice among others. The interns will also be given a virtual tour of Tihar Jail, police station and Asha Kiran shelter home in Delhi to gain practical insights into their functioning. They will also have book review competition, group research project presentation on the themes of human rights issues and declamation contest. Lt. Col. Virender Singh, Director was present
