IIT Madras starts application for its summer fellowship programme 2026; know eligibility, stipend & more

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) is inviting students to participate in its Summer Fellowship Programme 2026, a two, month program for bright young students from the fields of engineering, sciences, humanities, and management.

Scheduled from May 18 to July 17, 2026, the program offers the students an opportunity to conduct academic research work under the guidance of IITM faculty. The main aim of the fellowship is to make students more aware of research and interested in research by giving them a wellorganized, goaloriented internship experience.

Each fellow will be paid a stipend of Rs 15, 000 per month, hostel and mess facilities will be provided on a paid basis, and will be subject to availability. Interested candidates can apply here: ssp.iitm.ac.in/summer, fellowship, registration

Eligibility criteria

The programme opens up admissions to students who are currently studying their third year of undergraduate degree (BE, BTech, BSc Engineering, or three, year BSc in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics) and also those who are in the third or fourth year of integrated or dual degree masters programmes (ME, MTech, MSc). MSc., MA, and MBA students should be in their first year only and have an excellent academic record to be considered eligible.

While submitting applications, students must substantiate their academic excellence through criteria such as obtaining top ranks in university exams, delivering seminars, carrying out projects, taking part in design competitions, attaining Mathematics Olympiad scores, and receiving various awards or honors. Departments participating

The fellowship covers a broad spectrum of disciplines.

The departments involved are:

Engineering: Aerospace, Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Data Science and AI, Engineering Design, Electrical, Mechanical, Medical Science and Technology, Metallurgical and Materials, and Ocean Engineering.

Sciences: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Application Process

The fellowship portal for accepting online applications will be accessible from today (Feb 2) until March 2, 2026, 5 pm Students are required to scan and upload the copies of the following documents: recent passport, size photo, Aadhaar card, category certificate (if any), educational institution bonafide certificate, and consolidated academic mark sheets from Class 10 onwards.

Only complete applications will be processed further. No consideration will be given to incomplete submissions, which will be rejected. Students can find out the status of their applications on the portal (ssp.iitm.ac.in/summer, fellowship, registration) by logging in with the credentials that were emailed to them at the time of registration. There is no requirement of sending the hard copies of the applications to IIT Madras.
