Students with Low CUET UG Scores Can Still Get Admission Into Top Colleges: Here's How

Scoring low in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) UG would not necessarily mean the end of the road for a student's college admission. Although top colleges like those in the University of Delhi (DU) get thousands of applications every year, students with low UG scores can still find admission into other universities.

 

DU's popular colleges Hindu College, Miranda House and Hans Raj College get thousands of applications every year. Since competition for the limited seats is tough, students who miss out on a seat at their desired college during the normal admission process may have to try something else.

 

They should keep an eye out for spot rounds and mop-up rounds run by universities that have vacant seats after the official admission rounds.

 

What is the CUET UG spot round?

 

Generally, a spot round is run towards the later part of the admission process to fill up any vacant seats. Students who didn't get admission during previous counselling rounds, or those who did but decided to not take up the seat, may get another chance if the university runs a spot round. However, this round is not mandatory. It is only held if seats are vacant and according to the university's rules.

 

So students shouldn't rely on unofficial sources for admission updates and instead check admission portals run by the universities.

 

Can low CUET UG scores help in spot rounds?

 

Since these rounds are run when admission seats are vacant, students with relatively lower CUET UG scores may get an advantage as the cut-off for some courses will be lower than what was seen during normal counselling rounds.

 

Vacant seats which could not be filled during the DU admission process or other central, state and private universities can be filled by students during these spot and mop-up rounds.

 

But students shouldn't necessarily expect that a preferred college or course will always be available. Popular courses can continue to see stiff competition, even during spot admissions, with fewer seats being opened up as well.

 

What should students do?

 

As a general rule of thumb, students with low CUET UG scores shouldn't get their hopes up too high, and keep an eye out for any vacancies during the admission process. They should monitor notice boards and admission portals of universities for any such vacancies, and check eligibility, requirements and other guidelines before registering for the spot admissions.

 

Besides DU's most popular colleges, students should also consider other colleges and universities as well, some of which can offer better value for their efforts. After all, a lower CUET UG score wouldn't necessarily bar one from admission, but only if they know how to utilise the spot and mop-up rounds.
