Applicants from humanities, social sciences and science streams to get a monthly grant; Only first PG degree eligible

The University Grants Commission has published the merit list regarding the National Scholarship for Post Graduate Studies for the academic session 2024-25 pertaining to humanities, social sciences, and science streams. According to the notification, a total of 10,000 students have been included in the provisional merit list, which includes applicants' IDs, names of applicants, institutions, and courses. The national scholarship covers the financial assistance for students pursuing the first postgraduate program in India with the aim of strengthening advanced studies in identified disciplines in key academic areas.

The scheme is available to students who join a regular, full-time PG degree programme at an eligible institution only. Students who have already completed their PG programmes are not eligible for the scholarship. The UGC further clarified, "Students of open, distance or private mode of programmes shall not be eligible for the scholarship scheme." Also, according to the official notification, "In case of integrated programmes, the scholarship shall be given for PG component only. Only students who are below the age of 30 years of age as on the date of admission in the first semester/year of a PG programme are eligible to apply under these schemes,". The merit list of the 2024-25 cycle contains 5,000 slots for students belonging to both humanities/social sciences and the science stream. The list publishes critical information such as the institution and course of each student so that the selection is open for scrutiny.

This scholarship has been specifically designed to help meritorious students pursue their higher academic aspirations, and also to encourage higher education in different disciplines within the country. Reservation criteria for the scholarship give priority to women students' applications. According to the official notification: "According to the official notification, the slots reserved for women students will be filled first by single, twin, fraternal girl child without considering their marks in UG examination. While the remaining slots will be filled up by merit." This move aims at ensuring more participation of women in postgraduate studies.
