DU, JNU and Jamia Advised Students to Stay Away From CJP Protest, Might Face Backlash 

Students of Delhi University (DU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia have been asked not to join the protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi in support of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The warnings, which were issued on Thursday and Friday, refer to student safety, legal issues and the focus on academics as the movement keeps growing.

DU, JNU and Jamia issue advisories over CJP protests

Three central universities have urged students to stay away from the CJP protest, which is happening in Delhi, Jantar Mantar, amid growing concern over student participation in the demonstration. 

Delhi University had issued an advisory to students and faculty to avoid unlawful assemblies on Thursday. Both JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia issued similar advisories on Friday, encouraging students to focus on their safety and studies.

The universities advised students to refrain from activities that may result in legal or disciplinary consequences.

JNU issued a warning to students against protests and violation of social media

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in its advisory called upon its academic community to be responsible and refrain from holding any gathering at or around Jantar Mantar. The university had directed the students, faculty and staff to not join the CJP protests in the venue, in view of the Supreme Court directions regarding the demonstrations.

JNU also cautioned students to exercise caution while using social media, stating that any misuse of social media may lead to legal penalties and disciplinary action as per the University's code of conduct.

Jamia Millia Islamia encouraged students to concentrate on studies

Jamia Millia Islamia appealed to students, especially those who have recently joined the university, to remain focused on their education. Many of the students are from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and they bring the hopes of their families, the university said. It urged them not to take part in activities that could put their future at risk.

Jamia also cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pledge to take action against those involved in irregularities in the exams and ensure that students' interests are protected.

DU Did Not Want Students to Become a "political tool" 

DU warned its students following the CJP protests that have spread across various campuses of the Delhi University, with students marching in the North Campus of the university on Friday holding flags and placards.

Earlier, Delhi University had said that if students take part in illegal demonstrations, it may impact their academic performance, future employment prospects and personal safety. South Campus Director Rajni Abbi had also said that the university did not want students to be a "political tool" and that what started as a movement for examination reforms had turned into a political exercise in the university's opinion.

What happens next?

The warnings from DU, JNU and Jamia come as a sign of increasing concern among university authorities as the CJP protests in the national capital continue. With demonstrations expected to conclude as Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, educational institutions are likely to face criticism for violating students' right to peaceful expression.
