NEET PG 2026 Introduces Single-Shift Exam, Fewer Questions and Stronger Security Measures

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2026 is set to undergo significant changes after the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced a series of reforms aimed at making the examination more transparent, candidate-friendly and secure.

The revised guidelines, implemented by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences>, include a single-shift examination, a revised exam centre allocation process, a reduction in the number of questions and multiple technology-driven security enhancements to strengthen the integrity of the national medical entrance examination.

Candidates Can Choose Preferred States for Exam Centres

One of the major changes relates to the allocation of examination centres.

Instead of the earlier first-come, first-served model, candidates will now be required to select three preferred states while filling out their application forms. Their correspondence state must be listed as the first preference, enabling authorities to allocate examination centres closer to their place of residence wherever possible.

The new system is expected to reduce long-distance travel for candidates, a challenge that had affected many aspirants in previous years.

To further improve travel planning, candidates will receive information about their allotted examination city approximately three weeks before the examination scheduled on August 30. The advance notification is intended to minimise last-minute travel difficulties and accommodation concerns.

Exam Pattern Revised: 180 Questions in 210 Minutes

The NBEMS has also revised the examination pattern for NEET PG 2026.

The total number of questions has been reduced from 200 to 180, while the overall examination duration remains 210 minutes.

With fewer questions and the same time limit, candidates will have more time to analyse each question and make informed decisions, potentially reducing time pressure during the examination.

Enhanced Security Measures Introduced

To safeguard the examination process, authorities have introduced several advanced security measures.

Candidates will undergo Aadhaar-based biometric authentication during registration as well as on the examination day. If fingerprint verification is unsuccessful, iris-based biometric verification will be used as an alternative.

The examination process will also include:

• Advanced encryption for preparing and transmitting question papers.
• Comprehensive CCTV surveillance at examination centres.
• A dedicated email address for reporting impersonation attempts and other unfair practices.
• Strengthened digital monitoring throughout the examination process.

These measures are aimed at preventing malpractice while ensuring a secure and transparent examination environment.

Single-Shift Examination Across India

Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda recently reviewed preparations for NEET PG 2026 and emphasised the importance of conducting a fair, technology-enabled and transparent examination.

This year's examination will be conducted in a single shift, replacing the multiple-shift format used previously.

According to official figures, more than 2,73,183 candidates have registered for NEET PG 2026, representing an increase of over 12.5% compared to the previous year.

The examination will be held across approximately 340 cities at more than 1,300 examination centres nationwide.

To ensure smooth conduct, authorities have planned an extensive deployment of over 60,000 examination personnel, supported by biometric verification systems, CCTV monitoring and enhanced digital security protocols.

The latest reforms are designed to improve both candidate convenience and examination integrity. By reducing travel uncertainty, allowing more time per question, strengthening biometric verification and conducting the exam in a single shift, the government aims to provide a more standardised and secure testing experience.
