Padma Shri Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil, one of the most esteemed educationists, philanthropists and former Governors of Bihar, Tripura and West Bengal, passed away in the wake of a prolonged illness at his residence in Kasba Bawda, Kolhapur on Tuesday. He was 90.

Popularly called "Dada", Dr. D. Y. Patil has left a legacy that has shaped higher education and healthcare in India for decades, with his network of educational institutions educating lakhs of students.

A pioneer in the field of Higher Education in India

Dr. D. Y. Patil was well known for his efforts in promoting access to quality education in Maharashtra and the rest of the country. His foresight resulted into the foundation of several schools, colleges, universities and medical institutions under the D. Y. Patil Group of Institutions in the areas of medicine, engineering, management, dentistry, nursing, biotechnology and allied sciences.
