Jharkhand Students Protest Explained: Why Thousands of JPSC, JSSC Aspirants Are Protesting Against the Government

The ongoing Jharkhand students protest has become one of the largest mass student protest in the state in recent years, as thousands of aspirants to government jobs in the state demanded cancellation of the 14th Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) Civil Services Examination, reforms in recruitment agencies and an independent investigation into alleged irregularities in the exam.

The protest started from Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi in the late of July and has now taken a new form as several students have embarked on an indefinite hunger strike. With the Monsoon Session of the Jharkhand Assembly fast approaching, the agitation is now putting pressure on the Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand government in the fight to respond to the students' demands.

What is the Reason Behind Jharkhand Students' Protest?

The main demand of the protest is against the irregularities in the 14th Jharkhand Police Sub-Inspector Civil Services Examination and the issues related to recruitment through Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).

The recruitment procedure has been criticized by student groups and among young people who are seeking government employment.Student organizations and youth seeking government jobs have claimed that the recruitment process was opaque. Protesters are demanding:

• Cancellation of the 14th JPSC Civil Services Examination.
• Structural reforms in JPSC and JSSC.
• A probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or an independent panel headed by retired High Court judges from outside Jharkhand.
• Greater transparency and accountability in future recruitment examinations.

The agitation has continued for more than a week, drawing participation from hundreds of aspirants preparing for government jobs across the state.

Hunger Strike Intensifies the Protest

That changed after five additional protesters, two of them women, joined a hunger strike that is to continue indefinitely, bringing the total number of protesters to six.

Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, who has emerged as one of the leading voices of the protest, has been on a prolonged fast, demanding changes in the recruitment system.

Mahto, however, said that the protest is the voice of students from the state of Jharkhand who are demanding equal opportunities when it comes to government recruitment and transparency in competitive exams.

How did JPSC Recruitment Row Start?

The controversy began after the announcement of the 14th JPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination earlier this year. Following allegations of irregularities, the Jharkhand CID launched an investigation. Since then:

• 14 people have been arrested in connection with the alleged recruitment irregularities.
• The CID has conducted raids at multiple locations across Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Bokaro, Dhanbad and Palamu.
• Former JPSC Chairman L. Khiangte has been questioned multiple times.
• The JPSC postponed the scheduled Combined Civil Services Main Examination, citing unavoidable circumstances.

These developments have affected multiple recruitment processes and delayed appointments for several government vacancies.

What is Hemant Soren's statement?

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has admitted the fears of the protesting students. In a press conference, he stated that the Government was taking the case seriously and that investigative agencies were working on it.

The Chief Minister said that a number of arrests have been made thus far and raids were still underway in the course of the investigation. He assured the government that he would pursue a proper action in the light of the findings.

Congress Calls for Judicial Inquiry

The issue has also been a political matter. Senior Congress leader Ajoy Kumar had appealed to the state government to form a committee under the leadership of a sitting HC judge to check the alleged irregularities. He also called for the withdrawal of the results of the said examination and action against the officials involved in recruitment. The Congress is one of the big alliances involved in the ruling UPA of Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

Support from Student Groups

Some student groups have been supporting the protest. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which was earlier involved in the NEET paper leak protests, has now come out with its support for the Jharkhand students' protest.

The students' demand for transparent reforms in recruitment and examination is supported by CJP, which was founded by Abhijeet Dipke, he said.

In the meanwhile, organisers of the protest are mulling a 'Tiranga March' to widen the participation of the public if their demands are not met.

For thousands of students, competitive exams are a year of preparation, and the promise of a secure government job. If claims are made about irregularities, students say that the public's trust is diminished in the recruitment process.
