Nagpur BBA Student Arrested for Alleged Abduction and Sexual Assault of Minor, Demands Pizza and Comfy Bed in Jail

A BBA student arrested for allegedly abducting and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in Nagpur, Maharashtra, has reportedly been demanding special comforts from the police while refusing to cooperate with the investigators.

Police identified Nirbhay alias Akash Madhav Pakhare as the accused who was arrested after police rescued the teenager late on Monday from a rented flat in Nagpur. The investigators claimed the victim had been confined against her will for more than a day 

The case has garnered significant attention not just for the serious allegations but also for the actions of the accused following his arrest. 

Investigators say the accused has not had a medical exam and has refused medical treatment since his arrest. Police also said he has not given investigators the password to his cell phone or the survivor's phone, which investigators believe were still in his possession during the alleged period of confinement. The devices may contain valuable digital evidence that could be important to the investigation, officials said.

The investigators said the cooperation has been lacking in some parts of the investigation, which is ongoing as they gather forensic and electronic evidence. 

The accused, who was not a member of the police, alleged that the police had treated him in an inhuman manner and complained about the toilet and dirty walls of the lock-up, police said. He asked for pizza for breakfast, fancy food for dinner and a soft bed and mosquito repellent during his detention, officials said.

The accused has also reportedly alleged that he was mistreated by police. Officers have contested those claims, however, and stated that he has been treated according to custodial procedures.

The investigation started after the girl was reported missing on 2 August and the family lodged a complaint at Hudkeshwar Police Station. Police, through technical surveillance, traced her whereabouts to a rented flat in Nagpur and made a raid late on Monday night.

Police said the teenager was lying on a bed with her hands and legs bound and the accused was standing by with a belt in his hand. A knife was also found close to the bed. The survivor was rescued and taken to a hospital for medical examination and treatment, officials said, adding that there were multiple injury marks.

Last year, the accused opened a fake Instagram account called "Akash Mehra" to get in touch with the teenager, police alleged. He slowly earned her trust and then got intimate photos of the girl, investigators say. Later, police said he threatened to post those photos online to force her to keep in touch.

The investigators also said that the survivor had been sexually assaulted at a hotel on previous occasions before being summoned to the rented property in Dighori whenever the accused was in Nagpur. The claims are still pending investigation by police and have not been taken to court.

The investigation is continuing with police collecting medical, forensic and digital evidence, said police. The circumstances of the alleged offences and the electronic devices suspected of being involved in the case are still being investigated. 

The case is a minor and Indian law does not allow the publication of anything that might identify the survivor. The charges against the accused are still being investigated and he has the right to due process of law. The demands made in custody and allegations of non-cooperation are based on statements made by investigating officials and are part of the investigation.
