At the inaugural session of the EdInBox Regional Higher Education Summit 2026 held in Lucknow, Dr. T.P. Singh, Pro Vice Chancellor of Chandigarh University, Uttar Pradesh, called for a fundamental shift in India’s academic approach. He stressed that today’s education system must move beyond traditional silos and embrace inter, multi, and trans-disciplinary learning.

Explaining the distinctions, Dr. Singh said inter-disciplinary learning creates coordination between two subjects, while multi-disciplinary learning helps students develop parallel understanding across several domains. Trans-disciplinary learning, however, goes further. It breaks subject boundaries altogether and focuses on solving real-world problems, which he described as the most critical need of our time.

He also addressed the evolving nature of skills. Earlier, education followed a “terminal skills” model where a person learned one skill set and built a career on it. But with rapid technological change and shifting job markets, that model is no longer sufficient. Continuous skill learning is now essential, he said, urging both students and professionals to keep upgrading throughout their lives.

On artificial intelligence, Dr. Singh took a clear stance. AI should be used as a supportive tool, not as a guide. He cautioned that over-dependence on AI for directions could threaten independent human thinking and even human existence. Decision-making and leadership must always remain with humans, while AI should only assist.

In his closing remarks, he advised students to stay curious, flexible, and committed to lifelong learning. The true purpose of education, he noted, is not just to earn a degree but to become future-ready. His address resonated strongly with students and academicians present, who described his views as a roadmap for modern education.
