The Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) is one of India's most competitive design entrance examinations for students aspiring to pursue a Bachelor of Design (B.Des). Conducted annually by the Industrial Design Centre (IDC), IIT Bombay, UCEED evaluates creativity, logical reasoning, visualization, observation, and problem-solving abilities required for a successful career in design.

A good UCEED score opens opportunities for admission to leading institutes offering design education, including IITs and several participating universities that accept UCEED scores for their B.Des programmes.

Who Can Apply?

Students from Science, Commerce, Arts, and Humanities backgrounds are eligible to appear for UCEED, subject to the eligibility criteria announced for the admission year. The examination is designed for students who are passionate about creativity, innovation, design thinking, and visual communication.

UCEED Exam Pattern

The examination is conducted in a computer-based format and assesses candidates through multiple question types that evaluate analytical and creative abilities.

The test generally includes:

  • Section A – Numerical Answer Type (NAT): Tests logical thinking and analytical problem-solving without multiple-choice options.
  • Section B – Multiple Select Questions (MSQ): Evaluates conceptual understanding where one or more answers may be correct.
  • Section C – Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ): Measures reasoning, visualization, design aptitude, and general awareness with single-correct-answer questions.

Candidates are advised to refer to the latest official UCEED information brochure each year for the current marking scheme and examination pattern.

How to Prepare for UCEED

Success in UCEED requires a balanced approach that combines creativity with analytical ability. Students should:

  • Practice sketching and visual communication regularly.
  • Strengthen observation and imagination skills.
  • Develop logical and analytical reasoning.
  • Solve previous years' UCEED question papers.
  • Take full-length mock tests in a computer-based environment.
